The Problem is Choice

So my mate over at www.puddle.wordpress.com has just jumped on the specialties bandwagon, and being a shameless drone myself, I thought I’d follow suit!

That, and I’m also interested to see what medical specialties I’m interested in, because to be honest I’ve not given it too much thought beyond ’surgery’, but here goes…

Surgery – definately.  Wow, that was easy.  Since there are a lot of surgical specialties, this helps very little.

Trauma – In my mind, trauma surgery would be a dream job, because you would get to see a variety of surgeries as you’re not limiting yourself to a single system.  The clear favourite so far!

paediatric surgery – I think not…I’m alright with my hands but that’s fine detail there.

Emergency Medicine- I don’t know, maybe.  I think I’d get too annoyed patching people up and sending them off to a surgeon to have all the fun.

Cardiology – Possibly, but I would say it’s hard to get into.  Bright side – there’s always going to be work!

Respiratory – Snore.

Haematology & Oncology - I like blood; I don’t like cancer.  I think being a doctor, bad news is part of the job, but this might be going to far…

Obstetrics & Gynaecology – I like obstetrics (the idea of it, I mean), but I’m not loving (the idea of) gynaecology.  I won’t elaborate -you can do that in your own head.

GP – Not if I can help it!

Gastroenterology – Possibly, I do like the GIT, but I’m thinking there will be way too many puking people or people with NG tubes sucking bile out of them.  It’s one of those specialties that seems cool on paper and then whoops – reality.

Dermatology – Hahaha!  Oh god, why? Why?

Paediatrics – Not a chance.  It’s kids, nuff said.

Anaesthetics – Nope, no chance for this either.  I’m shit at math, but I also don’t want to train forever so I can sit and do crosswords while surgeons have fun.

Radiology – I heart radiology so much.  I just don’t think it will be exciting enough.

Pathology – No, though I do see the appeal.

Endocrinology – Um, possibly, actually.  This is a surprise to me.

General Physician – Apparently it’s really interesting.  We’ll see.

Nephrology – I love the kidney – their anatomy is soooo easy, though that’s probably the only easy part about them.  I just don’t think so, spaghetti arteries and my shaky hands….not a match made in heaven.

So there we go.  Not a lot of this surprises me, except endocrinology.  I guess because the endocrine system is so connected to every other system that pathology can affect everything.

Now thats my kind of medicine.

One Version of Things

I'm a 24 year old gay medical student living on the Gold Coast in Australia. This blog started as a way to blow off steam (ie procrastinate) during the tedious med-entry period, and snowballed into a sort of outlet of self-therapy. It's my way of pulling back to look at the bigger picture. So here it is - the bigger picture. Or one version, anyway. I hope you enjoy it here.
